History and Origin

Komondor is an old breed dated as early as 1550s. The origin of Komondor is debatable.
The most probable would be that Komondor is originated from Cumans, a Turkish normadic tribe, as Komondor means dogs of Cumans. Komondors originally used as flock guardians for sheeps from wild animals like bears, wolves and also human intruders.
They are fearless and will protect the flock with their lives. Komondors are commonly found in Hungary and have widely distributed across the world after presenting in dog shows and highly well-known for their flock guarding ability.

Temperament

Komondors are calm, confident and independant dogs.
They are loyal, protective and fearless confronting with intruders prone to endanger to they owner, flock or any possessions.
Komondor are one of the best guardians you can find. They may look lazy and sleep for long hours during the day, but during the night they are vigilant and guard around the surroundings.They may be good with children if socialize from young.
They do not tolerate well with strangers and other strange animals.
This breed needs firm and experience owner, training should always be happy and upbeat, not in anyway to frighten or threaten the dog to obey your commands.
This will mostly end up backfire.

Description (Appearance)

Komondors have a distinct appearance.
They have long corded felted-like white coat covering their whole body around 10 inches in length.
The corded coat is a result of curly outer hair binding with the dense undercoat; it forms naturally but will be tangled and matted without proper care and protection.
Puppy Komondors do not have corded coat until they are about 1 plus year old. With proper care, the cords will form and continue to grow longer. Komondors are big dogs, standing around 30inch from the withers with big bone structure.
Their body length is longer than their height.

Height -- 25.5 inches or more from the withers
Weight -- Dogs up to 125 pounds. Bitches 10% less.

Living Conditions

This breed can live both indoor and outdoor, preferably in a cleaner environment to avoid dust, dirt from collecting on the coat.
This dog best suited in a cooler and low humidity environment.

Exercise demand

Komondor do not need vigorous exercise but need regular exercise to stay fit if there is not given a particular job for it to do (ex: flock, children, house guarding).

Health problems

Komondor is prone to skin diseases, bloat and hip dysplasia.

Life Expectancy

11 - 13 years.

Grooming

Komondor do not need brushing.
Cords need to be maintained for tangling and bath frequently to prevent mites, bacteria from poliferate.
