History and Origin

Great Dane is said to be the tallest dog in the world. This breed has been available since around 400 years ago. The origin of this breed is debatable; some believes that they are from Germany, some believe that they are from Denmark, some other believe they are from Egypt, Greece, Rome and etc. Due to its long heritage, the breeds that Great Dane is developed from are also indistinct; possible breeds are Irish Wolfhound, Medieval Boarhound, English Mastiff and also Bullenbeisser.

Temperament

The Gentle Giant is its nick name. They are great family dog, they are calm and quiet most of the time. Due to their size, Great Dane may look intimidating but are very friendly in nature. They can be a good watchdog and scare off any unwelcomed visitors. They are not aggressive in nature by will be aggressive in defensive situations. They are good with small children but due to their size, boisterous play may result in accidents. Good with other animals if socialize from young. Training migt be difficult because they are quite stubborn sometimes and because of their size, it might be hard to control, advisable to have obedience training while young.

Description (Appearance)

Great Dane should always appear elegant and sturdy. The body is muscular and well-built and should never appear clumsy due to its size. The coat is short and smooth, color range from brindle, blue, black, black-masked fawn, harlequin, or mantle are accepted. The head is rectangular in shape, and the ears are sometimes cropped.

Size

Height--Dogs, 30 to 35+ inches. Bitches, 28 to 33+ inches at the withers.
Weight--Dogs, 130 - 180 pounds. Bitches, 110 to 150 pounds.

Living Conditions

Great Dane requires a lot of human contact make it poor candidate to live outdoor. Cooler climate is preferred.

Exercise demand

Graet Dane does not need a lot of exercise. Daily long walk and jogging along a bike is important to maintain a health dog.

Health problems

This breed is prone to gastric torsion, osteosarcoma and heart problems. Canine hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and Wobbler's syndrome may happen also.

Life Expectancy

7 - 10 years

Grooming

Great Dane do not need a lot fo grooming and seldom shed. Regular grooming to remove dead hair to maintain smooth and glossy coat.

Special Concern

Great Dane will need to consume large amount of food to support its large size.
