History and Origin

Doberman Pincher is consider a relatively new breed of dog, is breed and developed from Germany in the late 1800s by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector, night watcher, house supervisor and dog impounder. In these situations, he needed to have a guard dog that can protect him in case any situation that might arise. He set out to breed a type dog that is highly protective, intelligient, strong and ferocious. Doberman is believed to be bred from many breeds including German Pincher, German Shepherd Dog, Rottweiler, Bauceron, Greyhound, Great Dane, Weimaraner, Manchester terrier and etc. the exact mix is still uncertain to this day, however, it is said at least four breeds.

Temperament

Dobermans may look ferocious and dangerous but are generally loving and loyal. They are excellent guard dogs and are very protective when they feel their owner is in danger. They are very intelligient and easy to train, that's why that are one of the most popular police dogs. Dobermans are commonly know for guarding, some of them do display traits of herding and scent tracking due to their widely mixed ancestry. It is not advisable to leave small children unsupervise with Dobermans; they do no tolerate rough tugging and playing. They do not tolerate well with small animals as well, however, some do display otherwise. Doberman are family dog, prefer to stick closely with their owner instead of abandoned in the backyard.

Description (Appearance)

Doberman is a medium sized sleek, energy packed dog. It should always display high alertness and confident. "Sharp" is always the best description for this breed. Its coat is short and smooth, mostly black in color, fawn, red and blue is also acceptable, with mahogany/rust markings on the chest, muzzle, cheeks, eyebrows and legs. Doberman has a pointed muzzle and wedged shape head. Its ears and tail are usually docked and cropped.

Size

Height--Dogs, 26 to 28 inches. Bitches, 24 to 26 inches at the withers.
Weight--Dogs, around 88 pounds. Bitches, around 66 pounds.

Living Conditions

Doberman can live inside or outside the house depending on the climate. A house with small yard is preferred. However, they prefer to stay in just like any dogs. They do not tolerate will with cold climate.

Exercise demand

Doberman is very energetic and needs lots of frequent exercise, as much as vigorous exercise as possible else daily long jog is recommended.

Health problems

Doberman is generally a healthy breed. Common health problems are cervical vertebral instability - CVI, dilated cardiomyopathy, von Willebrand's disease. Other problems like Hip dysplasia, Cataracts, Cancer may happen.

Life Expectancy

10 to 13 years.

Grooming

Doberman has short coat, needs only little grooming. An average shedder.
