History and Origin

Boxers are breed and developed from Germany during the late 1800s. It is said that boxers are decendant from the the cross breed of Bullenbeisser, a mastiff type dog in Germany and also original Bulldog from old England. Boxers are developed for their agility and speed to chase down their prey and also their strong jaw to hold on to the prey before the hunter arrived. They are often used to chase down big prey like bear, deer and wild boar. The name Boxer is derived from where this breed has a tendency to stand on its hind legs and use its front paws to play like boxing. The first Boxer club and the breed standard is developed during the early 1900s, the standard documents has not change much until this day.

Temperament

Boxer is highly spirited, extremely playful and energetic. Boxer is highly intelligent but sometimes can be head-strong with a mind of its own. Boxer is extremely loyal to its family and an excellent watchdog and guarddog. It will restrain an intruder just like a bulldog. With quite an intimidating appearance, Boxer is very affectionate towards children, thus an excellent family dog as well. Boxer might not tolerate well with other dogs unless they are introduce at a young age. It will fight to display its dominance.

Description (Appearance)

Boxer is a medium sized, atletic build and powerful dog. Boxer is an intelligient dog and should always look alert and assertive. Its coat is short and smooth. Color is fawn or brindle, with or without white marking is acceptable. The mask should be black in color, partial white marking is acceptable but not excessive. The tail and ears are usually cropped.

Size

Height--Dogs, 22 to 25 inches. Bitches, 21 to 23.5 inches at the withers.
Weight--Dogs, around 70 pounds. Bitches, around 55 pounds.

Living Conditions

Boxers can live either indoor or outdoor, with sufficient human companionship. Cooler climate is preferable.

Exercise demand

Boxers need a lot of exercise; they are very energetic and playful. They enjoy daily walk, ball fetching and playing with their human companion.

Health problems

Boxers are prone to cardiomyopathy (heart problem), cancers, gastric dilatation (bloat) and intesin problems. They are also prone to hip dysplasia same as any larger breed dog. Due to their brachycephalic head (short head), exercising them should not be excessive to avoid breathing problem.

Life Expectancy

About 11 to 14 years

Grooming

Boxer needs little grooming and do not shed a lot. Brush and bath occasionally only when necessary. Boxers are clean dogs; they will lick and clean themselves.

Special Concern

None if occasionally drool and snore is acceptable.
