History and Origin

Yorkshire Terrier or "Yorkie" has a history dated not too long ago during the late 19th century. It is 1st registered under British Kennel Club. YorkieÕs ancestry came from North England where at that time they are much larger that todayÕs Yorkie. Yorkie are said to decendant of now extinct Clydesdale Terrier or Paisley Terrier brought from other places as far as Scotland and is unevitably cross breed with other terrier like black and tan terriers and skye terriers locally. Due to the growing communities for mines and factories, terrier dogs are used primarily to catch rats and other small animals. Thus, you can see Yorkies of today still inherit the strong instinct of terrier to catch, chase and bold.

Temperament

Yorkie is an intelligient, assertive and alert dog. They are very active and very adventurous at the same time. Without proper training, they are easily got lost during outdoor activities because they just love to play and do what they like especially running away from you playing find and seek and probably hunting for small vermins due to their terrier instinct. They can be a good watch dog with their vigorous bark but will not be a good guard dog due to their size. Yorkies are good family dog if human pack leader is established. They may display many attitude problems like over-protective, snappish, jeolousy if they do not understand pack order and lack of training. They are prefer to be around with older children and are not good around small animals. House breaking will be difficult for this breed but given enough patients and positive reinforcement, obedience trainings will be manageble.
