History and Origin
Papillon is one of the most oldest toy dog breeds.
The history of Papillon can be traced back to more than 700 years ago.
It is believed to be originated from Spain and had been brought to French court from Spain on the back of pack mules.
This breed was then named as Papillon, which get from the French word for "butterfly".
Papillon was also called Continental Toy Spaniel.

Temperament
Papillon is a friendly, playful, intelligent and obedient dog.
It is highly energetic and love outdoor exercise.
However, it can also be calm, patient and gentle.
Compare with other toy breed, it is more steady and not yappers.
Papillon is good with older children and cats if socialized since puppyhood.
Papillon is difficult to housebreak like other small dog but it is easy to train.
This breed is bread as companion dog and its also an excellent watch dogs.
Description (Appearance)
Papillon has an elegant look and is a spaniel type dog breed.
It has a small head; the skull is slightly rounded between the ears and of medium width.
Its ears are big, and erect or drop type with rounded tips.
This breed is also called butterfly dog because its ears are look like butterfly wings.
The tail of Papillon is long and plumed and carried curled over the back.
Its eyes are dark, round and not bulging with alert expression.
It has a small, rounded, black and its slightly flat on top.
The coat of papillon is long, silky, abundant, straight, fine and flowing.

Height as withers:
Dogs 8 - 11 inches (20 - 28 cm)
Bitches 8 - 11 inches (20 - 28 cm)
Weight:
Dogs 8 - 10 pounds (4 - 5 kg)
Bitches 7 - 9 pounds (3 - 4 kg)
Living Conditions
May not suitable to live in apartment because Papillon can get quite noisy and could disturb the neighborhood.
Exercise demand
Papillon is a very energetic and playful dog, which enjoys playing and exercising at outdoors in a secured area.
But play would not fulfill Papillon daily exercise, daily walk is needed for Papillon.
Health problems
Papillon is considered a healthy breed.
But it sometimes prone to Patella (problems with the kneecaps) and Progressive retinal atrophy.
Life Expectancy
About 16 years.
Grooming
Need daily grooming and brushing.
Dry shampoo when necessary.
Papillon is average shedder and do not matt or tangle.
