History and Origin

Miniature Schnauzer is one of the Schnauzer type dog orginated from Germany and is believed to have been mixed with Affenpinscher and Poodle to achieve this smaller size. SchnauzerÕs term come from ÒschnauzeÓ, German word for ÒsnoutÓ due to their distinctive furry muzzle. Schnauzer comes in three sizes: Standard Schnauzer, Giant Schnauzer and Miniature Schnauzer. Schnauzer orginally bred for hunting, guarding herding and etc, a type of working breed. Miniature Schnauzer today is not only a good companion dog but also inherits the instinct to hunt (rats) and watch over properties. Miniature Schnauzer is one of the most popular dog breed in the world today.

Temperament

This breed is energetic, loyal, playful and very intelligient. They might be stubborn at times. Exerting human dominance as pack leader is crucial to avoid dog aggression. They are good watch dog and good rat catcher. They enjoy being involved in activities especially with children. Like all energectic dogs, it is best provide them enough things to ocupy with else they will be quite destructive in the sense that they will look for something to play with that you might not be happy with.

Description (Appearance)

Miniature Schnauzer is a small and well-proportionate dog. They have distinctive appearance with long hair growing out from their muzzle, eyebows and face. The coat is double-layered. External hair outside is long and wiry and undercoat is soft. The coat is trimmed short close to the body except for legs and facial hair is retained. The color varies from black & silver, salt & pepper, black and possible white. The ears are sometimes cropped and tail is generally docked.

Size

Height -- Dogs 12 to 14 inches. Bitches 12 to 14 inches from the withers
Weight -- Male 12 to 15 pounds. Bitches 11 to 13 pounds

Living Conditions

Miniature Schnauzer can live either indoor or outdoor but prefer to be around human. Apartment life is acceptable though they will be very active indoor.

Exercise demand

Daily long walk and jog is essential. Occasional opportunity to roam free around fenced compound is a plus.

Health problems

Miniature Schnauzer is generally a health breed. Some may prone to liver, bladder, panchreas-type diseases, kidney stones and eye diseases. This breed is also prone to disease related to high fat level including hyperlipidermia.

Life Expectancy

About 15 years.

Grooming

Grooming may be troublesome for inexperience owners. The coat is quite long, daily grooming is important to prevent tangles and knots. Bring your dog to experts for grooming every twice a year. This breed shred minimal to no hair.
