History and Origin
Labrador or Lab as one of the retriever gun dog is considered the most popular dog breed in world. They are said to be originated from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, direct decendant of now extinct St. JohnÕs water dog. To trace back even further, St. JohnÕs water dog is said to be crossbreed of Bloodhound, some pointers and water dogs from Europe. In the 1400s, smaller short-coat retrievers were used to retrieve fish and swimming lines from the sea and the larger ones which may also crossbred with mastiffs are used to haul fishing nets.
We have a clear distinct two varieties descended from St. JohnÕs water dog, the larger ones are todayÕs Newfoundland dog and the smaller and short coat variety are the Labrador Retreivers. Today, Lab are not one used as gun dogs, with their people oriented, and gentle character, they are used as guide dog, rescue and search, and a good family companion.

Temperament
Labrador Retrievers are very friendly and intelligent, extremely sweet in personality. They are also loyal, playful and easily trained. They are excellent and reliable with chidren and small animals. They may be more aloof with strangers. Labs are suitable as watch dogs depending on the characteristic of each dog, guarding may not be suitable for this breed. Though more independent compare to Golden Retriever, without proper care and human attention, they may become destructive.
