History and Origin

Golden Retriever is said to be originated from England or Scotland, near the British Isle. Golden Retriever is originally bred as a sporting dog to retrieve fowl during hunt. They have soft mouth, fond with water and great nose for scent detection make them an excellent retriever. Golden Retriever is said to breed from Flat Coat Retriever, extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, Wavy-coated Retriever, Irish Setter, Bloodhound and Newfoundland. Besides excel in retrieving, their pleasant and friendly temperament makes them an outstanding companion dog. Golden Retriever is ranked one of the most popular dog breed in the world.

Temperament

Friendly, loving and confident is the typical characteristic of a Golden Retriever. They are people-oriented and eager to please. No humans to them are strangers or threat. Therefore, Golden Retriever is not a good watch dog and guard dog. They do bark but more of friendly greeting bark. They are also good with children and other small animals as well. Golden Retriever is not suitable for family who do not have enough time for them. Besides, Golden Retrievers are also very intelligent, one of the top 10 most intelligent dog breed in the world. They are also very versatile, suitable for search and rescue, drug detection and guide dog.

Description (Appearance)

Golden Retriever is well balanced dog with its ÒtrademarkÓ featherly medium-length gold coat. Golden Retriever displays a kindly expression and possesses a character that is alert and keen. Golden Retriever is double coated, the outer coat is water resistant, can be wavy or straight, color range from light golden to dark golden but never red. The head is broad and tapering, the ears are medium-sized and pendant. The tail and legs are feathered with long hair.

Height: Dogs 22-24 inches. Bitches 20-22 inches from the withers
Weight: Dogs 60-80 pounds. Bitches 55-70 pounds

Living Conditions

Golden Retriever do fine in an aparment providing suffiicient exercised, preferably a house with a yard. They do well with all types of climate.

Exercise demand

Golden Retriever needs daily long walk. They enjoy playing retrieving ball and others toys.

Health problems

Like any large dogs, Golden Retriever is prone to hip dysplasia. Cancer, eye disorder and skin disease may also happen to this breed. They should not be oeverfeed, they are easy to gain and overweight.

About 10 Ð 12 years

Grooming

The coat need regular maintainence to prevent tangles and mats but is easy to groom. Bathe only when necessary. Golden Retriever is an average shedder.
