History and Origin

The Brittany Spaniel is speculated to being cross of an Orange and White Setter and some not clearly identified dog. Brittanies were probably developed in the Brittany, a province of France in the 1800s. The Brittany was first shown in 1896 and became one of the most popular pointing dogs for bird hunting. It is considered to be the smallest of the gun dogs. The Brittany to this day still earned great popularity among hunters.

Temperament

Brittanies are happy, alert and sensitive dog with good nature and easy to care for. They are intelligent and primarily bred for bird hunting, which make it easy to train. They are very active and enthusiastic hunters. Besides, Brittany is also a obedient, loving and gentle dog. This dog tend to become hyperactive and experience separation anxiety when left alone, which could make them destructive. It is important to socialize a Brittany at an early age to avoid its natural softness turn into fearfulness or shyness. Brittanies are excellent with children if they are well supervised and raised with children from puppy hood. Brittanies can get along well with other dogs too. Brittanies are first-rate companion dogs.

Description (Appearance)

Brittany is a compact, medium-sized, leggy dog and muscular dog without appearing to be heavy set. It has an intelligent and vigour looking face. It is leggy that his height at the shoulders is the same as the length of its body. Brittany's eyes are amber or hazel, depend on the coat color. It has a rounded, very slightly wedge-shaped skull of medium-length of muzzle. The color of nose is fawn, tan, shades of brown or deep pink. A Brittany with black nose is disqualified. The ears are short and triangle which set above the level of eyes. Brittany can be tailless or has a tail docked to approximately four inches. The coat of Brittany is dense, flat or wavy, never curly. The texture of the coat neither wiry nor silky. Coat in Orange & White, Liver & White, Black & White, Liver Tri-color, and Black Tricolor with either a clear or roam pattern, with some ticking is accepted.

Living Conditions

Brittanies are very active indoors and is not recommended to live in apartment. An acreage will be suitable to them. They resistant to cold and damp conditions.

Exercise demand

As Brittany was bred as a hunting dog, it has agility and stamina and loves extensive exercise. Brittanies are suitable to have long, brisk daily walk or jog and do best with an active outdoor person or hunter.

Health problems

Brittanies are generally healthy dogs. They can be prone to canine hip dysplasia, glaucoma, spinal paralysis and epilepsy. Brittanies can also be prone to infections.

About 10-12 years

Grooming

Brittany's grooming level is minimal or moderate. Regular brushing is needed for medium length flat coat to keep it in good condition. Bathe or dry shampoo once a month or whenever necessary. Some skilled trimming of the coat is needed for proper show grooming. It is generally a low maintenance dog. Check the ears carefully for matter or debris, especially when the dog has been out in rough or brushy terrain. This breed is a light shedder.
