Common Dog Skin Disease - Pyoderma (Pus in the skin)
Information, Signs, Symtoms and Treatment




Pyoderma is a bacterial infection on the skin. This skin disease is very common on dogs but not uncommon on cats. Pyoderma is usually secondary problem of other skin disease/ damage. Pyoderma is primarily caused by a bacteria called Staphylococcus intermedius.

Pyoderma can be classified into:
(1) Surface Pyodermas
(2) Superficial Pyodermas
(3) Deep Pyodermas
(4) Depth of lession

The signs and symptoms of Pyoderma:

- Hair Loss over affected skin
- itchy
- patches of yellow colored skin
- smelling odor on the affected area
- skin may be inflamed

Treatment for Pyoderma:

(1) Antibiotic Treatment

- Apply antibiotics either systematically or used topically to kill the bacteria infection.

(2) Apply antibacterial shampoos, creams, ointments

- Use these antibacterial products which contain ethyl alcohol, triclosan, benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine.
- Apply the antibacterial shampoo and leave for about 10 minutes before rising it off.

(3) Apply topical antimicrobials

- Anitimicrobials is used to kill or inhibits the growth of bacteria, virus or fungi.
- It is efficient in primary skin infections.

  • American Cocker Spaniel
  • Bloodhound
  • Boston Terrier
  • Bulldog
  • Chinese Shar Pei
