- Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) Information, Signs, Symtoms and Treatment


Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), Hypersensitive to saliva of flea is the most common skin disease on dogs.
It is caused by flea bite and the dogs allergic to fleas' saliva. The saliva of the flea contains aromatic compounds, amino acids, enzymes, polypeptides, fluorescent materials and phosphorus.
The antibodies of the dog will repel the antigens in the fleas' saliva. But the repelling is unsuccessful for dogs with hypersensitivity to the antigens. This skin disease is happens most on summer. The life cycle of the fleas is depends on temperature and humidity. Fleas development occurs in moist and shadded area.

The signs and symptoms of Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD):

- Self biting, licking, scratching, chewing and other signs of pruritus.
- Ecematous skin rash on the tail, back of the legs and lower back.
- Hair loss
- Skin sores
- Inflamed skin

** Flea bite Dermatitis can lead to secondary skin infections such as Pyoderma and Hot Spots.

Treatment for Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD):

(1) Topical Treatment

- Choose tropical products which contain etofenprox, pyrethrin or permethrin.
These products not only can kill fleas, but also can repel them.
- Once-a-month flea control pills can stop the fleas from reproduce but it can't repel them and stop the fleas from biting.
- So once-a-month flea control pills should be used simulteneously with other products that can repel.
** Products which contain Permethrin shouldn't be used on cats.

(2) Environmental control

- Apply products that can kills adult fleas and stop the immature fleas from growing become adults.
- Other pets in the house should be treated to prevent them from continue to bring the fleas into the dog's environment.

(3) Apply EctoKyl Shampoos

- Bath your dog with EctoKyl Shampoos.

(4) Grooming

- Do regular grooming for your dog using bamboo brush or comb which can help to remove fleas from the dog.

(5)Regular checking on the dog coat for fleas and remove the fleas if found.
