Common Dog Skin Disease - Canine Atopic Dermatitis Information, Signs, Symtoms and Treatment
Canine Atopic Dermatitis is a non-contagious allergic skin disease which commonly occurs on dogs. Its has several common names such as Atopic disease, Inhalant Allergy, Allergic inhalant dermatitis, Canine inhalant dermatits and Atopic Dermatitis.
Atopic Dermatitis is caused by immunological hypersensitive to some allergens in the environment such as pollens, house dust mite, dust and molds. This disease is result from disorder of immune system.
Canine Atopic Dermatitis usually happens on dogs with age from 10 months to 2 years.
The signs and symptoms of Canine Atopic Dermatitis:
- Itchyness (pruritis) especially around the eyes
- Hair loss
- Scratching
- darkening of skin
- licking or chewing of the abdoment, paws and prerineum.
- rubbing of face
Treatment for Canine Atopic Dermatitis:
Treatments of Atopic Dermatitis often carried out in combination or comprehensive control, minimize the condition of Atopic Dermatitis.
(1) Apply Topical Steroids
- Topical Steroids can used to reduce the inflamed on the skin.
- There are different strengths when using steroids.
- High strength steroids are usually apply on the legs and arms.
- Low strength steroids are usually apply on the skin folds and face.
- Different Steroids, dose, and treatment duration can cause different side effects.
(2) Apply Omega-3 Fatty Acids (derived from fish oil)
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids is proved to be very beneficial in the treatment of allergies.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids can help to reduce the amount and effects of histamind.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids may not help in all cases of Atopic Dermatitis.
- Other types of Fatty Acides are not suitable for Atopic Dermatitis treatment and some can worsen the case.
(3) Antihistamines
- Antihistamine may not help in all cases of Atopic Dermatits and can cause sleepiness.
- Different Antihistamine will be applied in a different dose.
- Every Antihistamine will have different risk of side effects.
