History and Origin

Bulldogs were decended from mastiff, and developed in Great Britain. In the 13th century, the Bulldog was developed with a large and heavy head designed to used for bullbaiting, a gambling sport. The bulldogs was used to fight the bulla and this is where its name came from. The fighting will bulls game had successfully bred the aggressiveness out of the breed. Today, the English Bulldog is affectionate, gentle and loyal.

Temperament

Bulldogs are intelligent, friendly, good-tempered, good-natured, very equable and gentlest amonth other dogs. Besides, bulldogs also obedient and hence easier to train. They are enthusiastic and spontaneous in their behavior. They are calm indoor dog. Due to their friendly nature, bulldogs are getting well with children, other dogs and pets. Bulldogs are very affectionate and prefers to be close to the family. Bulldogs are not suited as kennel dogs.

Description (Appearance)

Bulldog has a broad, strong and squat build with massive square head but small in stature. The short and strong top line is broadest over the shoulders and narrows towards the loins. It has a deep, hefty and strong neck which tend to be short rather than long. The eyes of bulldogs are very round and dark, far apart and set low in the skull. The nose of bulldog is set between the eyes and has wide nostrils. Bulldog has a naturally short tail and thin and small ears. Its circumference is as long as the height of the shoulders. The coat hair of a bulldog is smooth, short, dense and fine. Bulldogs may have two color patterns: red and brindle. The red may vary from almost beige to dark deer red and place brown. They might have white marking and or a black mask There are(almost all) white bulldogs that must have dark pigmentation on the muzzle and eye rimes. Black color coat is not acceptable.

Size

Height: 12 - 16 inches (31-40 cm). (No prescribed height for bulldogs, the shorter the bulldog, the more it prized.)
Weight: Dogs: 53-55 pounds (24-25 kg). Bitches: 49-51 pounds (22-23 kg).

Living Conditions

Apartment is suitable for bulldogs. They are very calm indoors and will be fine without a yard. Owners should ensure giving bulldogs enough shading, water and kept out of standing head as they are extremely sensitive to heat and cold.

Exercise demand

Bulldogs require daily exercise but do not require long walks. They will quite happy with three short outings a day. The bulldog could gain weight if not properly exercise. This could cause health problems relating to the lungs and heart. Do remember that bulldogs are not able to withstand the heat, so do not take them out in a car or on a walk during hot days. Bulldog puppies have a tendency to keep on running and playing when they are exhausted. Make sure that they get sufficient rest and limit their exercise.

Health problems

The bulldog is prone to health issues. It has many common health issues such as Respiratory problems/ breathing problems, sensitive to heat and cold which amplifies the dog's respiratory problems. It also prone to poor eyesight, and because of its large heads in proportion to body size, puppies are often delivered by caesarian. The other potential health problems of Bull dogs are pulmonic stenosis, Ventricula Septal Defect, Inherited Metabolic Liver defect, Deafness, Elbow and Patellar Dysplasia, Hip Dysplasia, inability to mount in mating, mange and other skin infections especially in the wrinkled folds of skin.

Life Expectancy

About 8 years. Some can live longer but some may live shorter lives according to their health condition.

Grooming

Bulldog does not need much coat care. Its smooth and short-hair coat is east to groom. Regular brushing with rubber brush and hound glove to remove the dead and loose hairs will keep the Bulldog in a good condition. The owners of bulldogs need to wipe their face with a damp cloth every day to clean inside the wrinkles. Bulldog is an average shedder.

Special Concern

The English Bulldog needs an owner that has extensive knowledge of the breed and the health issues surrounding it and is of calm and patient character.
