History and Origin

Boston Terrier was bred in USA. The original Boston Terrier is a result of crossing the Enblish bulldog with an extincted white English terrier. Around 1870, Robert C. Hooper from Boston purchased a dog, know as Hooper's Judge, who was part of English bulldog and white English terrier. It weight about 30 pounds. Judge was bred down with a female dog, named either "Kate" or "Gyp", and the offspring was a dog named "Wells' Eph". Wells' Eph was mated with "Tobin's Kate" and the Boston Terrier is said to have evolved from these 4 dogs.

Temperament

Althought Boston Terrier were originally bred as a fighting dog, they were later bred for companion dog. Boston Terriers are mainly gentle, intelligent, alert, friendly and have a playful sense of humor. Because of their intelligence, Boston Terriers learn things very fast and easy to train. They are good with children and other pets. Some male Boston Terriers are dominant and may fight with other dogs. Besides being a companion dog, Boston Terrier also a good watch dog and will bark only when necessary. Similar with other small dogs, Boston Terrier are difficult to housebreak.

Description (Appearance)

Boston Terrier should be a medium size, well-muscled, compactly built dog with a short tail. It has a square and shor body and well-knit, a square skull which is flat on top, strong limbs and neatly turned and a wide muzzle. They have big, round and dark eyes and their noses are black in color. Boston Terrier's coat is smooth, short, bright and fine in texture. The color of Boston Terrier is brindle with white markings, the brindle must show throughout the body distinctly. Black and white markings are permissible, but brindles with white markings are preferred.

Living Conditions

Boston Terriers adapt well to urban or country living. They are relatively inactive indoor, and suitable to both houses and apartments. They will do ok without a yard.

Exercise demand

Owners of Boston Terrier should bring them for an on-the-lead walk if there are no garden to offer for it more freedom of movement. Boston Terrier is a pet dog and owner should not confine them in an outside kennel.

Health Problems

Boston Terriers are prone to eye problems, patelar luxation, sensorineural deafness and breathing difficulties when expose to exertion hot and cold weather.

Life Expectancy

About 10 to 14 years.

Grooming

Frequent brushing is needed for Boston Terrier. The coat rarely sheds.
