History and Origin

Bichon Frise were decented from Barbet or Water Spanie, which the name Barbichon cam from, and later on shortened to Bichon. There are four categories of Bichon, they are Bichon Bolognais, Bichon Havanais, Bichon Maltais and Bichon Tenerife. They are all originated from the Mediterranean area.

Temperament

Bichon Frise are friendly, playful, outgoing and intelligent. They are also very inquisitive and do make for excellent watch dogs. Bichon Frise are good companion with human as it has a cheerful attitude. They are also excellent with children. Besides, they are fine with other dogs and pets. Do not left a Bichon alone for a long period as it will suffer from separation anxiety. Bichon Frise is a breed that does not like to be left alone for long period Some Bichons are shy to strangers, but after getting familiar the the person, they will get comfortable. Bichons are difficult to housebreak.

Description (Appearance)

Bichon Frise have double layered coat which is loosely curled and fluffy-like. The coat is soft, fine, silky and always white with sometimes shading of cream. Bichon Frise have round dark brown or black eyes and some hair on their head, ears, tail and mustache. The tail of Bichon Frise is curved over its back.

Height: 9.5-11.5 in. (24-29 cm), at withers.
Weight: 7-12 lb. (3.2-5.5 kg).
Toy poodle: < 10 inches
Miniature size: >10 inches, <= 15 inches
Standard size: >15 inches

Living Conditions

Can live in apartment but need sufficient exercise. Bichon Frise are active indoor and are ok if without a yard. Owners of Bichon Frise should consistently exercise, train and socialize them with patient.

Exercise demand

Bichons are avtive and need a daily walk. They will also enjoy romp in a securely fenced yard.

Health problems

Bichons are prone to allergies, skin problems, watery eyes, epilepsy and bladder infections and stones. Bichon Frise can also be bery sensitive to flea bites.

Grooming

Bichon Frise needs frequent grooming. Bath is needed for Bichon Frise every month. Bichon Frise needs to be brush several times perweek, to prevent tangles. Professional grooming is needed for Bichon Frise every 4 weeks to keep in well looking. Bichons are non-shedding dog.

Special Concern

Similar with alot of small breeds, Bichons may be difficult to housebreak.
