History and Origin

Rhodesian Ridgeback is developed by the the Boers (Dutch, German and French farmers) migrated to South Africa looking for a all-in-one dog that can hunt, guard, protect, as companion and best suited to the harsh climate. This breed is developed by cross-breeding of local hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi people with Collie, Great Dane, Deerhound, Pointer and many others that are not clearly identify. The name of this breed came from the ridge on its back that formed by hair growing forward like a crown. The other part of the name came after the Boers migrate northwards to Rhodesia and the breed standard is fixed there. African Lion Hound is another name for Rhodesian Ridgeback. They are used to corner and hunt but not kill lions in pack.

Temperament

Rhodesian Ridgeback is a intelligient breed. They are ferocious and aggressive in hunting but they are friendly and loyal to their family. They are also aloof to strangers. Thus, they are excellent choice to be watch dog and guard dog. Rhodesian Ridgeback is a proud and at the same time sensitive dog, they require owner to threat them with respect in return with their loyalty and protective. They do not handle well with rough punishment. Although, they are good with children, older children are preferred. They might tolerate well with tugging and pulling from children. They are good with other animals if socialize from young. Training may be challenging without correct methods and patiences as these dogs have a mind of their own. Early pack rank establisment with human as the higher rank within the family is very important, else handling this big, active and muscular dog is going to be a harmful.

Description (Appearance)

Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large breed that is strong, harsh-looking and active. The most distinctive feature of this breed is the ridge of hair grown opposite direction forward from the rest of the coat and forms a "crown" shape near the shoulder. But not all Rhodesian Ridgebacks are born with ridge, about 1/3 of them are born without.

Size

Height -- Dogs 25-27 inches. Bitches 24-26 inches from the withers
Weight -- Dogs 80-90 pounds. Bitches 65-75 pounds

Living Conditions

Rhodesian Ridgeback is a active dog preferable with a house with yard. This dog can tolerate harsh climate and prefer to live indoor with their human companions.

Exercise demand

This dog needs a lot of exercise with great stamina. It is best leave the dog off leash in a safe area and roam around. They will be destructive not given enough exercise.

Health problems

Rhodesian Ridgeback is a hardy breed. They may be prone to hip dyplasia, thyroid problems and dermoid sinus.

About 9 - 11 years

Grooming

Grooming Rhodesian Ridgebacks are easy with their short and smooth coat. Brush with firm bristle and bathe only when necessary. They are average shedders.
