History and Origin

Beagle is a medium size dog which is breed for scent hunting; develop primarily to track hare, rabbit and game bird. The origin of this breed is vaguely known. It is said that beagle-type dogs are found during 500 BC in Greece. Beagles are said to decent from now extinct Talbot Hound, South Hound, North Country Beagle and todays Harrier.
The Beagle type dogs, by the 1700s, like South Hound which is heavier build, taller and slow but with good stamina and scent and North Country Beagle South Hound which is smaller and faster are said came close to extinction during the 1800s when fox hunting became popular and Foxhound, direct decendant from Beagle and Staghound is used.
The modern day Beagles are reestablished in 1830s by Reverend Phillip Honeywood for its hunting ability and Thomas Johnson to refine Beagle to be dogs that were attractive and proficient hunters.

Temperament

Beagle has gentle and merry disposition. Beagles are intelligient breed, but with a mind of their own. They are breed with tenacity and single minded to track down the prey, thus might be hard to train. They are friendly around people, sometimes might be aloof with strangers but easily won over. Hence, they are not good guard dogs. Beagle has loud and powerful voice used during hunting after track down the prey. The characteristic of bark and howl when facing the unfamilar make they relatively good watchdog. Excellent with children and other dog breeds. Beagles have strong pack instinct; well socialize within your family with enough companionship is essential.

Description (Appearance)

Beagles are top scent dogs along with Bloodhound. Scenting is differentiated into ground scenting and air scenting. Beagle is better in ground scenting which following trails on the ground than air scenting.
Beagles in general resemble English FoxHounds in appearance but in a smaller form. They are sturdier and compact looking different from Foxhound. The nose is black in color; ears are down, turning slightly towards the cheek. The tail is curl up slightly. The coat is smooth and hard, generally tricolour (white, brown and black). When puppy Beagle is born, they only have 2 colors, white and black but when they grow mature, the black marking will fade and brown marking will slowly appear. The black marking may fad away entirely.

Two Height Classes
Height -- Dogs 14-16 inches. Bitches 13-15 inches from the withers
Height -- Dogs 13-15 inches. Bitches <13 inches from the withers
Weight -- Dogs 22-25 pounds. Bitches 20-23 pounds

Living Conditions

Beagle can live indoor with enough exercise. House with small yard is preferred. Do well in either warm or cool climate.

Exercise demand

Beagle needs plenty of exercise but do not need to work to exhausion. Daily jog is recommended.

Health problems

Beagles are prone to eye disorder, epilepsy (brain dysfunction resulting in seizures) and Hypothyroidism (Dysfunction of the thyroid gland)

About 12 - 15 years

Grooming

Beagle is double coated, they will shed. Grooming is not difficult, brush daily and bath only when neccesary.

Special Concern

Like all Hound breed, they will wander away from home or during brisk walk tracking scent. Beagle voice is so powerful that it might irritate your neighbour during the night. Beagle might be prone to overweight without enough exercise.
