How to take your Dog's Temperature

A dog's normal temperature varies between 37.5ûC and 39.0ûC (100û and 102û F) and it can be useful to check this if you are wondering if a veterinary appointment is necessary.

This is done most easily when the dog is standing, but the dog may also be sitting or lying down.

Ask a helper to restrain the soothe the dog while you use a snub-nosed glass thermometer or rectal thermometer.

Lubricate the end greased with vegetable oil or Vaseline.

Shake down the mercury below 35ûC, then lift the dog's tail and insert the thermometer slowly but firmly for about 2.5cm (1 in) into the dog's rectum.

Hold it in place for about half a minute, the remove and wipe before reading the temperature.
