History and Origin

Border Collie said to be the most intelligient dog breed is originated from some herdings breed in the border of Scotland and England from a place called Northumberland. Border Collies have high herding instinct and are capable of using many types of herding methods. Eye staring to control the movement of livestocks is the most typical method used by this breed. And apart from other breeds, Border Collie has no limitation on the kind of livestock it can herd, it is said to be the most versatile herder in the dog world. All Border Collies today can be traced back to a single dog called Old Hemp, a quiet and powerful dog that most shepherds use it as stud; Old Hemp herding style has thus become Border Collie style today.

Temperament

Border Collie is extremely intelligient and very energetic. This breed is capable of understanding complex commands and very responsive, handle best with praise. Besides herding, some Border Collie make good family pet provided with ample exercise. This breed will find its own ÔworkÕ if confined in a house with nothing to do. Normally show line Borders are more suitable as family pet as they are calmer in temperament. This breed is kind with chidlren but due to its herding instinct, they tend to herd childrens. Also, startle movement and loud noise tend to bother them. Border Collie is not the best choice for house with small chidren. They may not tolerate well with small animals as well.

Description (Appearance)

Border Collie is a medium sized dog well-propotioned and smooth-outline, also giving an impression of endurance and sturdy. Border Collie should always look alert and eager. Border Collie has a longer body compare to the height from the wither. The coat in generally are slightly long, especially longer at the neck (mane) and tail (tail brush) area. Black and white by far is the most common color; others color variants are permissible but white should not be predominate.

Size

Height--Dogs, 19 - 22 inches. Bitches, 18 - 21 inches at the withers.
Weight--Dogs, 30 - 45 pounds. Bitches, 27 - 42 pounds

Living Conditions

This breed prefer outdoor than apartment life with a lot of space to run about. Cooler climate is preferred due to its thick coat.

Exercise demand

Border Collie need a lot of exercise. Daily running and ball retreiving is preferred. More mental challenging exercise like herding is best if available.

Health problems

Border Collie is generally a hardy breed but may prone to hip dysplasia, eye disease, skin disease and PRA.

Life Expectancy

About 13 Ð 15 years

Grooming

Regular grooming is important to maintain a clean and gleaming coat. This breed is an average shedder.

Special Concern

They can become neurotic if they are left alone for long period of time, also may lead to many behavior problems.
