History and Origin

Australian Cattle dog (ACD) is a herding breed developed in Australia during the early to mid of 1800's. It is also known as Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler and Red Heeler. It was bred to herd cattle throughout the harsh climates of Australia.
Australian Cattle Dog is the result of combination between the Blue Merle Smooth-Coated Collie, Dingo, Australian Kelpie, Dalmatian, and Bull Terrier across many generations.

Temperament

Australian Cattle dog is energetic, loyal, alert and independent streak.
It is the one of the most intelligent dog breeds. This breed needs plenty of exercises and jobs to do or it can become easily bored and lead to serious behavior problems and can be destructive.
very cautions and suspicious to strangers and this makes it a perfect guard dog. By his primary instinct, it will attempt to herd and nip at the heels of anything that moves.
Australian Cattle dog's dominance level is high and is not recommended for novice, sedentary or apathetic dog owner. Besides, it is not good with children except for family members it has known since puppyhood.
It is easy to train. This dog may be too active and intense for home life.

Description (Appearance)

Australian Cattle dog is compact, muscular, athletic, sturdy and substantial in appearance. Its body is slightly longer than high.
Its head is broad and slightly curved between the ears. The nose is black in color. The eyes of Australian Cattle dog are in oval shape and in dark brown in color. Its ears should be of moderate size, broad at the base, muscular, moderately pointed neither spoon nor bat eared, and set wide apart on the skull.
The coat of Australian Cattle dog is smooth, a double coat with a short dense undercoat. There are two primary coat colors which are red and blue. The color of the coat is not solid.

Bitches: 17 - 19 inches (43 - 48 cm) at the withers

Dogs: 32 - 35 pounds (15 - 16 kg)
Bitches: 30 - 35 pounds (14 - 16 kg)


Living Conditions

Australian Cattle dog is very active and energetic and not suitable to live in an apartment.
House with a large yard is good, the best is having a job to do.

Exercise demand

It is very energetic and need to do a lot exercises. This breed came be easily to get boring and may lead to serious behavior problems.
Having a job to do is good for Australian Cattle dog.

Health problems

This breed is a relativel healthy and long-lived breed.
However, it prones to hip dysplasia, PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and deafness.

Life Expectancy

About 12 - 15 years.
But according to the Guinness Book of World Record, an Australian Cattle dog named Bluey, is reported to live up to 29 years, 5 months and 7 days.

Grooming

Australian Cattle dog prones to seasonal shedder and tense to shed once or twice per year.
Its short haired coat needs little care and coat maintenance. Can be groomed using comb and brush with a firm bristle brush about once per month. It needs a full grooming every 8 to 12 weeks.
Bathe only when necessary using good quality shampoo such as oatmeal shampoo or tea tree oil shampoo.
