Grooming for long haired dog

1. Begin wit the hind legs. Lift the outer hair and brush the undercoat thoroughly. Then brush the topcoat down smoothly and follow by combing from root to tip. Repeat with the front legs.

2. Hold up the dog's head, brush down the throat and between the forelegs. Brush the fine hair of the stomach with firm but gentle strokes, right from the roots, paying special attention to any bits of twig or grass seeds that might be caught in the coat.

3. Brush, then comb, the body from shoulders to rump, dealing with the undercoat first, then the topcoat.

4. Comb the long hair of the ears and around the face, but you should be very gentle in this area. Comb out the feathering of the tail and on the back of the legs in some breeds.

5. Wipe each eye with a damp ball of cotton wool to clean away tear-staining or loose hair. Use a fresh pad of damp cotton wool to clean around the nose. You can clean out the folds of the ears with damp cotton buds but never poke them into the ears themselves.

6. Check the paws carefully; remove any grit or grass seeds from between the toes and trim away excess fur with blunt-nosed scissors.

7. Give the coat a final polish with a chamois leather kept specially for the purpose.

If your dog has a light-coloured coat, it may benefit from dry shampooing. This is no substitute for a bath but it can remove grease and make the coat look cleaner, thus avoiding excessive washing, which can be detrimental to the coat. The powder is sprinkled on, left a short time, then brushed out thoroughly.

Grooming for short haired dog

Use a bristle brush to remove dead hair and skin, working up from the rump to the head in sections, making sure that the whole coat is groomed. If the dog has any feathering on its tail, use a comb to run through it. Finally, finish off the coat with a chamois leather to give a good shine.
