Dog Breed Behavior - Barking
Barking is a dog's natural instinct. Barking is their main method to communicate besides howling, grunting, whining and howling. Some dogs may bark more than others. Dogs like terriers and herding breeds are generally bark more. Beagle is one of the dogs that bark a lot. The main purpose for a dog to bark is to alarm, if your dog barks eccessively, you need to identify the reason behind its barking before you can get a best solution.
If your dog barks at visitors or at the mailman, this is common. It is a sign of alarm. If you do not what your dog to bark at strangers, you can train them. However, it might probably you have choosen the wrong breed at the first place. If you would like to have a less barker, probably you should choose certain breeds like Basenji or some other friendlier dogs like Golden Retriever or Siberian husky.
Your dog may bark to get your attention. Or, maybe it is too bored or lonely. Dogs are pack animals; they leave closely together and interact with each other everytime. If your dog is separated from you for too long of a time, in most cases, they will bark because they are upset, also to get your attention to accompany them. Therefore, in most cases, there are reasons behind why your dogs act the way they are.
For dogs that are are seeking for attention, you could start ignoring and not responding to the dog. When it stops, praise them. Do not give way to the dog when the barking is not stopping, they will associate with good rewards with lots of barking.
If it is caused by lonely or bored, you could try getting another dog for his companionship. For separation anxiety barking, you should reestablish yourselves as the leader of the pack. Because, in doggy dog's world, only leader is allowed to leave the pack, the followers should always follow the pack leader. If your dog thinks that he is the leader then he may get extremely worried for your safety when you are not around.
Reestablish your position by giving trainings to your dog. If your dog has not learned basic sit or stay. You should train them so. During training, always show confident and firm, praise them when they do correcting, make them obey to your 1st command, give permisson and deny permission. Being fair and consistent in your handling, the dog will happily listen to you and recognize you as their pack leader.
