 Continue from the previous post, below are some explaination of the types of dogs used for wild boar hunting. Many types of dogs are able to be a good wild boar hunting dogs, curs, hounds, mix breeds etc, it all depends on the type of hunting pattern you prefer. Some may like the dogs do most of the job from tracking, chasing to catching. Some may only want their dogs to sniff out the boars, track them down silently and you end it with your gun. All depends. Refer below to make your best combination:

For biting – Catch Dog – bite and do not let go. Most Bull Breed dogs and bull-mixed are good catch dog. Like Pit Bull, Bulldog, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, Alano Espanol etc. They are the gladiators.

For barking and stopping – Bay Dog – They are not as courageous as Catch Dogs. Their main purpose is to chase down a prey in a pack, nip it and bark at it to pervent the prey from running away until you arrive. These are especially useful dogs. In a pack of dogs for hunting, they should consist no less that 2 or 3 in a pack of 8 dogs. Depending on your hunting strategy, if you do not need your dogs to hold down the prey until you arrive and would mind the casualties of your dogs. These dogs are the suitable ones. Depending on situation, some bay dogs are also catch dogs when facing with smaller boars.

For leading – Find Dog – They are the dogs that find the boar and chase after it until they get it. You only need one in your pack and they are especially a hard dog to get. Mostly you won’t know a dog is a Find Dog until you bring them to the woods and let them show you. Find Dog take the lead to smell out boars, then let the others loose to follow it. Find Dog can also be a bay dog but should not be a catch dog. You don’t want it to end up most of the time in vet and loose the opportunity to go pack hunting. Besides, Find Dog needs to have another quality which is able to come back to you after any unsuccessful chases. You don’t want it to go “Holland” or bring other dogs to “Holland”…

For group voluming – Pack Dog – they can be of any dog and stay in pack with the other dogs. These dogs add volume to your pack, they might only know how to bark but they act as a diversion to the boar if the boar charges and more importantly when you have a pack of dogs charging toward a boar less tendency for a boar to fight back than to fleet.

After some research, from the rainforest country i am from. PitBulls are used initially for most of the hunters for the verocity and gameness(may not apply to all hunters but this is what i have surveyed locally). The reason due to inexperience leaving most of the job to the dog. Well, human reaction – fleet facing a 120lb hog charging at you unlike a Pitbull that face them head on even to the death (Salute!). Fatality rate is very high due to a few reasons: (1) being too gungho (2) without protection vest (3) undergrowth too thick and lots of long stolons;

see picture below:

To reduce the fatality and increase success rate: Some hunterswill just go direct with rifle luring them close with food after locating the boars usual feeding time and location. Some others will use snare (which is illegal). Others who still prefer to hunt together with dogs will switch breed into maybe hound breed or local curs. Switching from catch dogs to bay dogs.

The bay dog should not be large for maneuverbility, good stamina, stopping and baying the boar from running off until you arrive, having tracking ability, loud bark and easily noticable in bushes. From a hunter i get to know — he uses Beagles. Yes, Beagles never imagine that right! Beagles do really satisfied all the above requirements, having the small size, good stamina, loud bark, air/ground scent ability and a white-tip tail setting up high during hunt. Perfect!

Though this is just one of the breed that satisfied the bay and find requirements. I am sure there are more breeds to be explored and could be better than Beagles. Airedale Terrier? Otterhound? more to be studied

A part from that, during hunts, normally no less than 7-8 dogs are used. Types of dogs are very important. Roles of the dogs played during each hunt.

We will explore the types of dogs in the follow-up post.

Dogs for wildboar hunting may seem cruel to many ppl but as breeders and dog enthusiats this may seems to be interesting because it is a method to bring out the fullest potential of each dog and by all means legal from the country I am from.

It is unlike dog fighting where dogs with great stamina, power jaws, agile are put together to contest for the best of both. In boar hunting, dogs need not only the attributes from above, they require other skills like tracking either by ground scenting or air scenting, teamwork, maneuver across thick bushes in tropical rainforest and etc.

Though no doubt about it, dogs that are specialize in dog fighting like pitbull are most suitable in many ways for their tenacity, power and terrier instinct to chase prey, however, many of this dogs end up in the tusk of boars, fatality rate is too high to be consider the best breed for the job.

Besides it is also depends on many other factors to find the perfect dog for the jobs, it is also hunter specific, not all hunters want their dogs to catch and hold the boars, some want them to only track and locate the dogs, some want their dogs to corner and only bay at the boars to confused them. Moreover, terrain and vegetation in the hunting ground do play a big role; the perfect dog in a plantation might not be the perfect dog in the plane. But in all, to get a dog that will be able to perform fairly well in all conditions can be consider the best breed.

In Argentina, ppl use Dogo Argentino, in some part in US ppl use pit bull, pit/mastiff mix, cur/pit mix etc. In Australia, bull Arab is the most famous as the all rounder. Many other variety and mix are tried and each of them has their own saying. So how about rainforest, a place with dense understorey vegetation, muddy forest floor and high humidity? What is the perfect breed, prefect combination? No such breed is documented yet as I can remember.

I will go check out and put up some follow-up next time.
