After some research, from the rainforest country i am from. PitBulls are used initially for most of the hunters for the verocity and gameness(may not apply to all hunters but this is what i have surveyed locally). The reason due to inexperience leaving most of the job to the dog. Well, human reaction – fleet facing a 120lb hog charging at you unlike a Pitbull that face them head on even to the death (Salute!). Fatality rate is very high due to a few reasons: (1) being too gungho (2) without protection vest (3) undergrowth too thick and lots of long stolons;
see picture below:
To reduce the fatality and increase success rate: Some hunterswill just go direct with rifle luring them close with food after locating the boars usual feeding time and location. Some others will use snare (which is illegal). Others who still prefer to hunt together with dogs will switch breed into maybe hound breed or local curs. Switching from catch dogs to bay dogs.
The bay dog should not be large for maneuverbility, good stamina, stopping and baying the boar from running off until you arrive, having tracking ability, loud bark and easily noticable in bushes. From a hunter i get to know — he uses Beagles. Yes, Beagles never imagine that right! Beagles do really satisfied all the above requirements, having the small size, good stamina, loud bark, air/ground scent ability and a white-tip tail setting up high during hunt. Perfect!
Though this is just one of the breed that satisfied the bay and find requirements. I am sure there are more breeds to be explored and could be better than Beagles. Airedale Terrier? Otterhound? more to be studied
A part from that, during hunts, normally no less than 7-8 dogs are used. Types of dogs are very important. Roles of the dogs played during each hunt.
We will explore the types of dogs in the follow-up post.
